SCIRT traffic update: Week starting Monday, 31 August, 2015

Major works starting: Linwood – Woodham Road

Major works begin on the Southern Relief wastewater project. Traffic impacts will be:

  • Worcester St closed between Woodham Rd and Dacre St, and one-way southbound (towards Linwood Ave) between Dacre St and Linwood Ave.
  • Woodham Rd one-way between Kerrs Rd and Ngarimu Street (heading west towards Gloucester St). Please follow the detour onto Ngarimu, Dunarnan and Kerrs Rd.
  • Dunarnan St one-way heading east towards Kerrs Rd due to the detour.
  • Ngarimu St entry only at the Woodham Rd corner.
  • Avonside Drive (between Gloucester and Ngarimu Sts) is closed for around 2 weeks.

Orbiter buses will be detoured around the work area via Gloucester St and Linwood Ave - please visit the Metro Website or phone Metro Info on 366 8855 for any service changes. 

The emergency repairs on the Southern Relief in Woodham Road in 2011 (between Kerrs and Pages Roads).

Armagh St (park) bridge reopening for Spring – thanks everyone

Just in time for Spring, the Armagh Street Bridge will reopen to motorists on 1 September. This will restore access to the Botanic gardens carpark so the temporary accessway put in past the croquet and tennis clubs from Riccarton Ave will go back to normal from Monday 7 September.

SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team wants to give special thanks to the public, nearby businesses and park users for their patience and support while essential earthquake repair work was completed on the 130 year old bridge.

SCIRT in the Central City – expect delays and avoid during peak times

  • Madras St between Tuam and Lichfield Sts is down to one lane.

  • Manchester St is southbound only between Gloucester and Hereford Sts.

The Central City continues to be a busy place with many other organisations working on the rebuild. Find out where all the traffic changes are to help plan your trip in and around the city at:

  • Rowan Ave has a progressive one-way closure northbound between Pages Rd and Carisbrooke St for about 10 weeks. 
  • Pages Rd is one-way, city-bound only, from Bexley Reserve to Shuttle Dr. The south sides of Pages/Marlow and Pages/Portchester intersections are currently closed.
  • Mattingley St remains one-way westbound (from Portchester to Carisbrooke) for the next 2 weeks.
  • Hampshire St closed between Marlow and Portsmouth. Road closure is progressing down Hampshire St towards 97 Hampshire St. Access to and from Portsmouth St reinstated soon.
  • Breezes Rd remains one-way between Wainoni and Pages Rds. Please watch for pedestrians, cyclists and children by the two schools on Breezes Rd. 
  • Doreen St is one-way eastbound (towards Marlow).
  • Carisbrooke St is one-way from Portchester to Winchfield St this week with the one-way progressing towards Warblington St.
  • Wimborne Cres progressive road closure for about 5 weeks. Follow the signs.
  • Eureka St one-way northbound from Soberton St to Wainoni School. Southbound traffic detoured along Meon Street. Please take extra care near the school. 

Work in other suburbs


  • Lake Terrace Rd is closed between Burwood Rd and De Ville Pl, including the Burwood Rd intersection. Resident access maintained. Please follow the detour signs and support local businesses impacted by the closures.


  • Donnington St between Queenspark Dr and Aberfoyle Pl is closed for about 2 weeks.

Edgeware / St Albans

  • Packe St between Canon and Purchas Sts is one-way northbound (from city) for about a month. Southbound traffic detoured via Canon to Barbadoes and Purchas Sts.
  • Geraldine St between Purchas St and Bealey Ave is one-way for southbound (city bound) traffic for about 2 weeks.


  • Two-way traffic maintained, but limited entry/exit options at Clarence and Elizabeth Sts intersection this week.
  • Traffic will not be able to enter/exit Darvel St at Kilmarnock St this week. Use Mona Vale Ave and Matai St East to access Darvel St.


  • Helmores Lane bridge repairs means no on-street parking on Helmores Lane (between bridge and Harper Ave).
  • Carlton Mill bridge repairs underway at the intersection of Harper Ave, Park Tce and Carlton Mill Rd. Two-way traffic remains but reduced lanes on Carlton Mill Rd and Park Tce may cause delays. Take extra care around pedestrians and cyclists. Repairs will take around 3 months.


  • Work on Papanui Rd – between Clare Rd and Derby St - was delayed for a few days and is now due start the week of 31 August. Two-way traffic will be maintained but there will be no right hand turn from Derby and Rastrick Sts onto Papanui Rd. Watch for cyclist, buses and changing traffic conditions.

Richmond – Chrystal St

  • Progressive one-way southbound along Chrystal St. Watch for changing traffic conditions.


  • Follow the signs and watch for changing traffic conditions with work around manholes in Barclay St, Bampton St, Rowe Pl, Horseshoe Lake Rd, Cresswell Ave, Mundys Rd, Cheam St and Sutton Place for about 2 weeks.
  • Road and footpath repairs on Marshlands Rd between Hercules St cnr (The Palms) and 123 Marshland Rd (near Garden Hotel) for about 10 weeks. Two-way traffic remains, but take extra care, expect delays, and watch for cyclists.
  • Road and footpath repairs on Hammersley Ave and Hercules St for about 6 weeks. Check signage for one-way and changing road conditions.
  • No exit from Petrie St on to Shirley Rd for about 5 weeks. Only westbound traffic on Shirley Rd can enter Petrie St.
  • One-way for northbound traffic on Hills Rd (between Guild and Dudley Sts). Southbound (towards city) traffic to follow the detour. Dudley St/Hills Rd intersection currently left turn exit only onto Hills Rd. Watch for changing traffic conditions.


  • Follow the signs and watch for changing traffic conditions around the area while storm water pipelining work is completed for about 2 more weeks. Watch our video on pipe lining here:

North New Brighton

  • Take care around Palmers and Bowhill Rds intersection which will have lane closures and temporary traffic lights for about 2 weeks. Please allow extra time for your journey.


  • Follow the signs and watch for changing traffic conditions like lane reductions and turning restrictions along Linwood Ave while pipelining and patch repairs are completed.
  • Avonside Drive (between Gloucester and Ngarimu Sts) is closed for around 2 weeks.

Bromley – Kawau Cres

  • Watch for changes with the progressive road closure along Kawau Cres until end of September.


  • Glenroy St one-way westbound (towards city).
  • Smith St between Bray St and Ferry Rd closed until October. Traffic on Matlock St  unable to enter / exit Smith St. Please use Mackworth St. 
  • Hopkins St between Wildberry and Hobson is closed for about another week. Resident access maintained where possible.

Spreydon & Somerfield

  • Sydney St closed to through traffic. Resident access maintained.
  • Traffic is one-way northbound (towards city) on Barrington St east of Milton and Frankleigh Sts. Southbound traffic please follow detours. Watch for road closures and turning restrictions where Barrington St intersects with Somerfield St, Rose St, Stanbury Ave and Studholme St.  


  • Work on Hazeldean Rd between Lincoln and Grove Rds will detour traffic down Harman St and Lincoln Rd for around 2 weeks.

Hoon Hay

  • No exit on to Sparks Rd from Rydal St.


  • Watch for changed traffic conditions and restricted access at the Main Rd and Taupata St intersection for about 2 weeks.
  • A progressive road closure is now in place along Beachville Rd as the Beachville Seawall repairs are now underway. Resident access maintained.


  • Watch for changed traffic conditions and follow the signs for work on the Esplanade, Panorama Rd. Van Asch St has a road closure for about 2 weeks.

Lyttelton – St Davids Street retaining wall

  • From early September the next stage of repairs on the retaining wall near Sumner Rd will get underway. Watch for temporary road changes and restricted parking.
