Keyes Road – New Brighton – Fresh water main renewal
We are replacing the water main along Keyes Road, between Hawke Street and Pratt Street. This work is starting on the 7 May and will take approximately eight weeks.
All works are subject to favourable weather and on-site construction conditions.
The existing water main pipe suffered multiple breaks in the February, June and December earthquakes. The replacement PE water main and sub main will be installed on Keyes Road between Hawke Street and Pratt Street. The work will take approximately eight weeks to complete, subject to suitable weather and ground conditions along the pipeline.
Where we are working

The red line shows Where the water main will be replaced on Keyes Road between Pratt and Hawke Streets.
The yellow arrows traffic flowing north/west only from the Hawke to Pratt Street intersections.
The orange circles show areas where open trenching is likely to be required: at the junction with Pratt and Rawson Streets, at the Lonsdale Street junction, and at the Hawke Street junction.
Pratt and Rawson Streets are already closed to tarffic at the end where where they meet Keyes Road.

Methodology
To complete the water main replacement we will use horizontal directional drilling to install approximately 75-100 metres of pipe at one time. We may need to open trench in difficult areas, these areas are marked by the orange circles on the map on the previous page. The existing main will remain operational until the new line is installed and brought into service. Dewatering, using spears and extraction pumping, will be required to drop the water table at all times.
How our work could impact you
The directional drilling machine will cause minimal vibrations. The drilling may cause increased dust, water will be used on the road as required to keep dust levels down. There will also be increased noise associated with the diggers and dewatering pumps on site. A temporary water shutoff will take place in order to decommission the old main and connect the new water main, this is only for a short period. Residents affected by this will be notified before the water is shutoff.
Traffic Impact
Keyes Road will be closed to south bound traffic from the Hawke Street intersection. There is currently a one-way detour in place along Keyes Road for the wastewater replacement. Traffic is only able to travel north on Keyes Road; southbound traffic is diverted via Baker Street. A three way stop/go system will be required when we need to connect the water main at the intersection of Hawke Street and Keyes Road. There will also be a three-way stop/go system at the intersection of Lonsdale Street and Keyes Road when we are working on this section. Access to local residents will be maintained.
Stay Safe
Stay safe and alert, keep children at a safe distance from the work site. Please do not allow children to play in any water around the site. If you wish to speak to someone on site please go to the person furthest away from any moving machinery.
