Works overview in New Brighton - wastewater and fresh water

Printer-friendly version
Earthquake repair work to the wastewater and fresh water networks is continuing in New Brighton. Many of the pipes in the area suffered significant damage in the February 2011, and subsequent, earthquakes. The map below shows where Fulton Hogan will be repairing, and improving the resiliency of the underground networks in the upcoming months. This newsletter provides an overview of the Fulton Hogan works in this area.

What pipes are under the road?

There are many essential services located underground, below the surface of the road. The number, size, and the depth of the pipes varies from street to street. Often the services under the road include:

  • Fresh water pipes
  • Stormwater pipes
  • Wastewater pipes
  • There are also ducts for cables such as telecommunication and power

We may need to repair more than one pipe in a section of the road. We we have a ‘dig once’ policy, in some cases, we cannot have two crews in the same trench, or the pipes are under different sides of the road and we will need to return to a street more than once. The road surface will be repaired last, after all of the underground infrastructure
has been repaired.

Impact on other services?

  • We don’t expect for our work on the wastewater pipes to impact other services, like the fresh water main.
  • However, the network is still fragile so please be prepared in case there is an unexpected service cut off.
