Fitzgerald Avenue Twin Bridges - Richmond / Linwood / Central city - Wastewater - bridge and roading repairs - Overview

What we are doing

  • Downer as part of SCIRT will be doing wastewater repairs on the Fitzgerald Avenue Twin Bridges. Refer to Map 1 for location of work.
  • We will be replacing the wastewater mainline that currently runs above the ground alongside of the bridge.
  • We will be conducting repairs to the bridge handrails.
  • The road, kerb and footpaths that run alongside the Twin Bridges will be resurfaced.
  • Work will start during the week of Monday 27 June 2016 and take approximately three months to finish, subject to favourable weather and on-site conditions.

Traffic impacts

  • There are six stages in Traffic Management during the works. Please refer to Map 2 and Map 3 for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the works. You will receive prior notification before any changes in traffic management occur.
  • Two-way traffic on Fitzgerald Avenue will be maintained across the Twin Bridges during the works.
  • Access to footpaths will be closed while we make repairs to the handrails. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.
  • Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.
  • Please be alert to changes in traffic management, follow signage and drive to the changed conditions.
  • Cones and signs are essential to allow our workers to safely complete the work. Traffic management is a legal requirement.

Stage 1 Works

  • Stage 1 works will start on Monday 27 June, 2016 and continue for about 3 weeks.
  • During Stage 1 the wastewater pipe will be installed North of the Twin Bridges. Refer to Map 2 for location of works.
  • Temporary scaffolding will be placed in the Avon River underneath the Twin Bridges.
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained on Fitzgerald Avenue across the Twin Bridges. There will be no-parking cones in place alongside the worksite.
  • Please follow signage on-site and drive to the changed conditions.

Stage 2 Works

  • Stage 2 works will start once Stage 1 works are complete. Stage 2 will take about one week to complete.
  • During Stage 2 a new manhole will be installed in the centre island south of the intersection. Refer to Map 3 for location of works.
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained on Fitzgerald Avenue across the Twin Bridges.
  • There will be no right turn across the intersection of Fitzgerald Avenue, Avonside Drive, and Kilmore Street during this stage of works.

The SCIRT programme is scheduled to finish at the end of 2016. After SCIRT has finished, the Christchurch City Council and New Zealand Transport Agency will continue to repair and rebuild the remaining earthquake damaged infrastructure.

  • Works will have no planned impact on current power, telecommunication, water or gas services. However, the network is still fragile so please be prepared in case there is an unexpected service cut off.
