Assessing other infrastructure damage
All of the damaged retaining walls in Lyttelton are being recorded and catalogued. The data is being gathered by our team of surveyors. They use very accurate measuring instruments to build up a three-dimensional profile of each wall. This is useful information that had never been gathered and can inform future planning activity.
Major damage in stopbanks is reasonably easy to see visually and by the effects of its failing. This was adequate for the initial assessments. Geotechnical engineers are also making scientific stability analyses using methods like Cone Penetration Testing (CPT).
