Extent of other infrastructure damage
There are about 600 retaining walls in Christchurch. A large percentage of Lyttelton walls are damaged, from slight to severe. We've determined that about 150 walls in Lyttelton need repairing. The total rebuilding cost is likely to be tens of millions of dollars. Unfortunately, very little of this work will be covered by insurance or there is a very low level of coverage.
12 kilometres of stopbanks by the Avon River were weakened in some way. 5 kilometres, all within CERA's residential red zone, failed to stop water from the river banks. The Avon River was the only waterway where stopbanks were properly damaged.
