Extent of road damage on a map

Most of the serious damage remaining is from the 2011 earthquakes, and is east of Hagley Park. There is extensive moderate and minor road damage north to Kaiapoi and south to the Port Hills.

We estimate that 1,021 kilometres of road need rebuilding due to earthquake damage. This is 52% of Christchurch's urban sealed roads. A small percentage of roads outside of the residential red zones are classified as seriously damaged. There will be major renewal projects to rebuild these roads and in some cases the road will need full reconstruction.
